Eddie Howe is set to leave his role as Newcastle United head coach, according to reports. The decision follows a period of contemplation over his future and has resulted in an agreement with the club to end his four-and-a-half-year tenure.

Howe's departure marks the continuation of a turbulent summer for the club, with key players Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali having already left St James' Park. Uncertainty also surrounds the future of Bruno Guimaraes, with Arsenal reportedly interested.

During his time in charge, Howe had a significant impact on the club, guiding Newcastle to Champions League qualification on two occasions. He also led the team to their first major trophy since 1955, winning the Carabao Cup in March 2025. In total, Howe won 112 of his 231 games as manager.

The 48-year-old is understood to be seeking a break from football. The agreement to part ways has been reached amicably, with no falling out between Howe and the club hierarchy.

Newcastle are reportedly already in discussions with potential replacements, with Matthias Jaissle of Al Ahli mentioned as a candidate.

Coaching Journey at Newcastle

Howe took over as Newcastle manager in November 2021, replacing Steve Bruce. At the time, the club was in the relegation zone shortly after a takeover by a consortium led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF). Howe successfully steered the team away from relegation and subsequently led them to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League the following campaign, securing Champions League football.

However, the most recent season proved more challenging, with Newcastle struggling for consistency and finishing 12th in the Premier League. Their Champions League campaign concluded at the last-16 stage after a significant aggregate defeat to Barcelona. Despite these difficulties, Howe remained in his role following end-of-season talks with club officials.

Howe's final match in charge was a pre-season friendly against Bristol City on Wednesday night, which Newcastle lost 4-1. He described the scoreline as "a difficult one to take" but viewed the game as a "good test" for his team.
