Eagles Sign QB Joe Milton from Cowboys' Practice Squad Amid Jalen Hurts' Blood Clot Diagnosis

The Philadelphia Eagles are set to sign quarterback Joe Milton from the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad, according to multiple reports. This move comes as the Eagles' starting quarterback, Jalen Hurts, has been ruled out for an upcoming game due to a superficial blood clot in his calf.

Hurts has largely been available since becoming the Eagles' starting quarterback, starting all 17 games in 2023 and missing only two games with a concussion in 2024. He also sat out the team's regular-season finale in 2024 when starters were rested. Backup Tanner McKee is expected to start in Hurts' absence.

The team's statement detailed the discovery of the blood clot. Hurts sought treatment for his calf on October 8th after being cleated during the Rams game on October 4th. He had practiced fully on Wednesday and Thursday leading up to the injury report addition on Friday. An ultrasound performed on Saturday, following the team's flight to London, revealed the superficial blood clot. Team doctors and medical staff in London determined that activity was important and that Hurts could play safely, recommending a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of their return to Philadelphia.

Milton's addition means he will be placed on the Eagles' 53-man roster, potentially impacting rookie Cole Payton's backup role. Payton, a fifth-round draft pick in April, has appeared in only one game this season and has not attempted a pass. Milton has some NFL experience, though he has not started a game. He was cut by the Cowboys in the offseason after Sam Howell won the backup job and was subsequently placed on their practice squad.

Milton expressed surprise at his release from the Cowboys but stated his readiness to adapt. He spent five weeks on Dallas' practice squad before the Eagles' interest.

It remains unclear how long Hurts will be sidelined. He has thrown for 933 yards and eight touchdowns in five games this season. The Eagles are currently on a three-game losing streak and will host the Carolina Panthers next.
