Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts Out for Sunday's Game Due to Blood Clot
Philadelphia will start Tanner McKee at quarterback against the Panthers.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers due to a superficial blood clot in his calf.
The Eagles announced Thursday that Hurts has been receiving treatment for the condition for nearly a week. He first sought treatment on Oct. 8 after being cleated during the team's Oct. 4 game against the Rams. Hurts practiced in full on Wednesday and Thursday of the following week, but was added to the practice report on Friday.
An ultrasound performed on Saturday following the team's flight to London revealed the superficial blood clot. The team's medical staff and doctors in London concluded that Hurts could safely play, recommending a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the return flight to Philadelphia. He played without limitation in the game on Sunday.
A follow-up ultrasound on Wednesday night revealed movement in the small blood clot, leading to the decision to sit him for the upcoming game. The team stated that Hurts' health and safety are their highest priority.
Blood clots can pose serious health risks, including blocking blood flow to vital organs, which can lead to a pulmonary embolism, stroke, or heart attack. Untreated, they can also cause tissue damage or prove fatal.
With Hurts sidelined, third-year veteran Tanner McKee is expected to start at quarterback for the Eagles against the Panthers. McKee has started two games in his career, with the Eagles winning one and losing the other.
The Eagles face three division rivals in succession after Sunday's game: the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Commanders, and the New York Giants.
