Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts Out for Season With Multiple Blood Clots
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will miss the remainder of the NFL season after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has been diagnosed with multiple blood clots in his lungs, an injury that will sideline him for the rest of the NFL season. Doctors have begun immediate treatment for the condition, which involves anticoagulation therapy, commonly known as blood thinners.
Despite the serious diagnosis, Hurts is considered clinically stable and is not expected to have any significant functional limitations. He is anticipated to make a full recovery and resume football activities once he is no longer on blood thinners. He will remain active around the team and continue conditioning during his recovery period.
The injury was initially suspected after Hurts took a cleat to the calf against the Los Angeles Rams. He subsequently played in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars the following week, reportedly without sleep after being hospitalized until 4 a.m. the night before the game. After returning to the United States, he was placed on injured reserve and missed the Eagles' recent game against the Carolina Panthers.
In a statement released by the Eagles and Hurts' agent, Nicole Lynn, the team provided details on his condition. "Over the last few days, Jalen Hurts has received comprehensive medical evaluations by physician experts," the statement read. "In the interest of transparency, we are providing additional information on the diagnosis and treatment plan related to his condition."
"Jalen was initially diagnosed by specialists in London with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis. After further testing and monitoring, the current diagnosis is a deep vein thrombosis, as well as bilateral pulmonary emboli," the statement continued. "He is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations. His treatment should only involve anticoagulation. During this time, he will not be allowed to participate in any contact activities, including football."
The statement concluded by expressing optimism for his recovery. "Jalen's prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery. We anticipate that he will have the opportunity to resume contact football activities when off the blood thinners. In the meantime, he will remain active around the team and continue to condition. More importantly, we anticipate that he will have no long-term effects. We are thinking of Jalen and looking forward to a strong recovery."
