Duckett's Century and Dawson's Four Wickets Lead England to Consolation Tri-Series Win

Ben Duckett scored a magnificent 167 and Liam Dawson took four wickets, securing a consolation victory for England against Sri Lanka by 55 runs in their final match of the tri-series. England posted a commanding total of 386-5 after Duckett's commanding knock, which came off 132 balls. Sri Lanka's chase saw a strong effort from Pavan Rathnayake, who scored 118 off 77 balls, but they were ultimately dismissed for 331.

Duckett's century, his second in consecutive matches, was the highlight of England's innings. He capitalized on a batting-friendly surface and a Sri Lankan attack that showed signs of fatigue. The opening partnership between Duckett and Tom Banton was again effective, adding 163 runs before Banton was dismissed for 74. Contributions from Harry Brook (44), Will Jacks (30), and Jordan Cox (43 off 27 balls) further bolstered England's total, ensuring Joe Root did not need to bat.

The tri-series highlighted some of England's bowling vulnerabilities, particularly in the middle overs. However, Liam Dawson provided crucial breakthroughs. He took the wicket of opener Avishka Fernando and later dismissed Rathnayake and Asitha Fernando. Sam Curran and Sonny Baker also contributed with effective spells at the end of the innings to close out the win.

Despite the bowling challenges, England coach Brendon McCullum expressed satisfaction with the team's depth, noting the healthy competition for places, especially with the return of Jacob Bethell from injury. The performances of players like Duckett and Banton present selection dilemmas, which McCullum views as positive problems for the team.

Sri Lanka now turns its attention to the tri-series final against Pakistan on Sunday, while England is set to tour Australia for a series of ODIs and T20s in November. The match against Sri Lanka was England's last in the tri-series, concluding their campaign with a victory.
