Dubois and Wardley Ready for Brutal Rematch, Acknowledging Fight Risks
Boxers Daniel Dubois and Fabio Wardley prepare for their highly anticipated second bout, with both fighters acknowledging the inherent dangers of heavyweight boxing.
Daniel Dubois and Fabio Wardley are set to face each other for a second time in what is anticipated to be an even more brutal encounter than their initial clash in May. The heavyweight boxers have expressed a shared passion for their sport, despite acknowledging the severe risks involved.
Their first meeting at Manchester's Co-op Live Arena saw Wardley knock Dubois down twice in the opening rounds. The fight concluded in the 11th round when Dubois stopped Wardley, who had been reduced to a battered state but continued to fight.
When asked about the potential long-term health consequences, such as dementia, Dubois stated, "Dementia? If you're talking about dementia, no point worrying. We've probably got it already." He described his mindset heading into fights as "living with the chaos" and embracing the fear it generates, which he says provides power and clarity.
Wardley approaches the rematch with a different perspective. Having lost his world title in their previous encounter, he emphasized the importance of how a fight concludes. "I feel more relaxed and confident having proved I can engage a top-level fighter in a great fight, which everyone expected me to lose easily. Calm makes me better," he said. Wardley also revealed that he and his team have analyzed every critical moment from their first fight and adapted their strategy, believing he has more to work on than Dubois. He anticipates offering Dubois a different challenge in their upcoming bout.
Dubois, however, remains confident in his ability to defeat Wardley again, vowing to "bash him up. Smash him worse than before. And quicker." He believes he knows what to expect from Wardley and that his opponent is not capable of adapting sufficiently. Dubois downplayed the earlier knockdowns, attributing them to being caught and asserting that Wardley lacks significant power.
Wardley disputed the severity of the damage he sustained in their first fight, with his trainer Ben Davison maintaining that he was still capable of fighting when the bout was stopped. Wardley stated, "The optics looked bad, what with the blood and the bruising and the punches. But I trust my team to take care of me. Trust them with my life." He recalled shaking Dubois with an uppercut in the 10th round and suggested a clean landing from his follow-up right hand could have changed the outcome.
Both fighters have aspirations beyond this rematch. Wardley hopes to eventually face the winner of the Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury bout, while Dubois aims to unify other world titles. Despite the uncertainties, the rematch is expected to deliver another thrilling contest, with Dubois appearing particularly confident, a demeanor he has not shown before a fight in this manner previously.
