Donovan Mitchell has agreed to a four-year, $273 million maximum contract extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers, signing on the first day he was eligible. The deal includes a player option for the 2030-31 season and a trade kicker.

The extension will make the Cavaliers one of the most expensive teams in the NBA, as the team reportedly aims to attract LeBron James back for a potential third stint in Cleveland. According to ESPN, Mitchell would welcome the opportunity to play alongside James, with the shared goal of competing for a championship. The Cavaliers were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Finals last season.

Mittchell's new contract will see him earn $60.1 million in the first season of the extension, 2027-28. He is set to make $65.8 million, $70.6 million, and $75.5 million in the subsequent three seasons, including his player option year in 2030.

The Cavaliers are already operating under the second apron, which significantly limits their flexibility for roster moves, including trades and other signings. Meanwhile, James is expected to meet with various teams in the coming days and weeks as he considers his next move, with the Cavaliers hoping to be a contender for his services on a league-minimum contract.
