Jeremy Doku is expected to be available for Belgium's decisive World Cup group stage match after returning to the squad following the birth of his son. The 24-year-old winger traveled to London for the birth of his first child, Praise, after his wife's expected July due date moved up.
Doku had been ruled out of Belgium's recent 0-0 draw with Iran due to a respiratory issue. The Belgian FA confirmed he received permission to travel to be with his family, stating he was able to fly without medical risk. He rejoined the squad in Seattle on Tuesday evening. Doku had previously indicated his desire to be present for the birth of his child, acknowledging the potential for federation support. "It depends on when it happens, but it's my first child, so I would definitely want to be there," he said prior to the tournament.
The player faced criticism from French journalist France Pierron, who called his decision "disgusting" and described fathers as "useless" during childbirth. Pierron argued that missing the World Cup for such an event was inappropriate given the rarity of the opportunity. Doku's decision, however, received support from fellow footballers, including England's Ollie Watkins. Watkins defended Doku's choice, emphasizing that welcoming a first child is a unique and important life event.
Belgium currently sits third in Group G and requires a victory in their upcoming match against New Zealand in Vancouver on Friday to advance to the knockout stages.
