The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed closer Edwin Díaz on the injured list for the second time this season. The move was confirmed Tuesday by a source with knowledge of the situation, one day after Díaz pitched three runs in mop-up duty during the Dodgers’ 11-5 win over the Colorado Rockies.
Right-handed pitcher Emmet Sheehan is being recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City as a corresponding move. While the specific nature of Díaz’s current injury was not immediately clear, it is not believed to be directly related to the elbow injury that previously sidelined him.
Díaz underwent surgery in April to remove loose bodies from his elbow, an injury that caused him to miss three months. The $69 million offseason acquisition has struggled throughout his debut season with the Dodgers.
In 16 appearances this season, Díaz has a 11.85 ERA and has converted only 7 of 11 save opportunities. Since returning from the injured list at the end of July, he has posted a 12.91 ERA.
