Novak Djokovic's campaign at the U.S. Open concluded abruptly in the first round, as the Serbian star was defeated by 25-year-old Mariano Navone on Sunday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The final score was 6-7, 7-5, 6-4, 2-6, 1-6 over more than four hours of play.

Djokovic appeared to be struggling with illness throughout the match. Broadcasts showed him vomiting on the court during the third set. He also took a medical timeout to address his back following the fourth set.

Despite his visible discomfort, Djokovic managed to win the second and third sets after dropping the opener. However, he lost the fourth set decisively and appeared to be in significant pain and lacking energy in the final set.

Navone, currently ranked No. 49 in the world, capitalized on Djokovic's condition. Djokovic, seeded No. 4 in the tournament, was a semifinalist last year, losing to Carlos Alcaraz.
