New Jersey Devils captain Nico Hischier is being recognized for his quick actions in saving a family from a dangerous situation while boating in Switzerland. The incident occurred near the Engehalde Weir, a dam close to Bern, during the NHL offseason.

Hischier, the first overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, observed a family in distress on an inflatable raft. The family, consisting of two adults and two children, was reportedly being pulled towards the dam and was unable to extricate themselves from the perilous current. Hischier intervened, described by onlookers as acting heroically to assist the family.

Following the rescue, Hischier downplayed his role, stating, "In this situation, everyone is grateful for support, and we were all relieved that no one was hurt in the end." He also acknowledged the assistance of first responders.

This act of bravery comes shortly after Hischier signed a five-year contract extension with the Devils. The deal, with an average annual value of $11.7 million, will commence after the current season.
