Deshaun Watson Orchestrates Crowd Turnaround in Browns' Upset Victory
Quarterback's performance shifts home crowd from boos to cheers in Cleveland's win over the Carolina Panthers.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson experienced a dramatic shift in crowd reception during the team's upset victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. What began with jeers from the home crowd, particularly the Dawg Pound, evolved into chants of "Let's go Watson" by the game's end, as the Browns mounted a fourth-quarter comeback.
Watson, who had previously voiced frustration with the home crowd's reactions, including calling them "disrespectful" for booing him after an Achilles injury in 2024, acknowledged hearing the crowd's positivity. "I was hearing the crowd, the yelling the positivity," Watson stated post-game. "That's my main focus. I didn't hear any of [the boos], but at the same time, I was just trying to give them something to cheer about and we got that W so that's all that matters."
The turnaround in crowd sentiment appeared tied to Watson's performance on the field. After trailing 12-10 entering the fourth quarter, Watson led the Browns to a comeback win, throwing two touchdown passes. This marked Watson's first regular-season home game of the current season and his first since suffering the Achilles injury in 2024.
Watson's tenure with the Browns has been marked by significant off-field issues, including an NFL suspension in 2022 related to allegations of sexual assault. Coupled with a substantial contract and a perceived underperformance in his initial seasons, these factors contributed to fan dissatisfaction. However, his role in Sunday's comeback win appears to have mended some of that fractured relationship with the Cleveland fanbase, at least for the day.
"From the moment I woke up, just the anticipation, just the anxiousness, just everything, just to get in front of the fans, just to get here, just to get started," Watson said of his mindset entering the game. "I wanted to play perfect so bad, but, you know, that's the NFL with its ups and downs ... The energy, the fans, it was amazing. They kept believing in us. They kept the energy up ... And we just continued to feed off that energy of the crowd."
