Derek Jeter Declares ALDS Game 2 a 'Must-Win' for Yankees After Series Opener Loss
The Yankees legend emphasized the importance of avoiding a 0-2 deficit against the Rays.
NEW YORK – Yankees legend Derek Jeter issued a stark warning to the current team: American League Division Series Game 2 against the Tampa Bay Rays is a "must-win." The sentiment comes after the Yankees dropped Game 1 of the ALDS on Saturday night by a score of 1-0.
Jeter, speaking on Fox Sports' postgame coverage, stressed that the team cannot afford to approach Monday's crucial game with any less urgency. "It’s a must-win [game]," Jeter asserted. "You cannot go down 0-2, I don’t care if you’re back to New York or not, and expect to win three [in a row]."
The Yankees' offense struggled mightily in Game 1, being shut down by Rays ace Drew Rasmussen. Rasmussen delivered an exceptional performance, pitching eight shutout innings, striking out 10 batters, and allowing only one hit – a double by catcher Austin Wells. Wells was later thrown out at third base attempting to stretch the hit into a triple, a baserunning mistake that drew commentary.
Despite likely American League Cy Young winner Cam Schlittler scheduled to start Game 2 for the Yankees, Jeter highlighted the necessity of capitalizing on the opportunity. "That’s the approach you have to have," Jeter said. "You have Schlittler on the mound — you must win that game."
Jeter acknowledged the Rays' consistent success throughout the season, noting their strength, particularly at home. "Tampa has been the best team in the American League all year, they are tough to beat, especially in that stadium," he stated.
Following a dominant Wild Card series sweep of the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees' bats fell silent in the ALDS opener. Pitcher Gerrit Cole gave a solid five innings, surrendering only a solo home run to Jonathan Aranda, but the offense could not provide enough support.
Analysts, including former player Alex Rodriguez, pointed to the offensive struggles and baserunning errors as contributing factors. Rodriguez remarked on the potential for such mistakes to become habitual if not addressed earlier in the season. "That Wellsie mistake, is that the reason they lost? Probably not," Rodriguez said. "But when you look at the first six months, it’s a dress rehearsal for October…If you’re not accountable April through September, these mistakes are not a surprise."
The Yankees are set to face former Mets pitcher Freddy Peralta, acquired by the Rays at the trade deadline, in Game 2.
