The Los Angeles Lakers are entering a new era following LeBron James' decision not to return for the 2026-27 season. While opinions are divided on the team's future performance without the eight-year veteran, former Lakers star Derek Fisher believes the team is not destined for a significant decline.
"You think about the few organizations where LeBron has been, you tell me where their record has gotten dramatically better after he left. So it’s not going to fall off that much because Luka is there," Fisher said in an interview with 97.1 The Fan LA. He also highlighted the potential of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves as an "All-Star backcourt" and the defensive capabilities of center Walker Kessler.
Fisher projects the Lakers could achieve between 45 and 50 wins, contingent on various factors falling into place. "I think you have a chance…45 to 50 wins, a lot of things are going to have to go right, but it feels fair to me," he stated.
General Manager Rob Pelinka has made moves to reshape the roster, including a four-year, $130 million contract for Walker Kessler. The team's success will likely depend on Doncic's ability to lead the Lakers, a challenge he has previously met with the Dallas Mavericks. The expectation in Los Angeles is for its sports teams to win, and Doncic will be under scrutiny to carry the Lakers' load in James' absence.
