The Cleveland Browns have signed cornerback Denzel Ward to a record-breaking contract, making him the highest-paid player at his position in NFL history. The new deal, announced Tuesday, aims to quell trade speculation surrounding the star defensive back ahead of the 2026 season.

Ward's extension adds two years to his existing contract, keeping him with the Browns for the foreseeable future. The agreement is reportedly worth $62.2 million, including $52.3 million guaranteed, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. This new deal eclipses the previous contract he signed in 2022, which also made him the highest-paid defensive back at the time.

The recent contract negotiations occurred amid uncertainty about the Browns' direction following the trade of defensive end Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams on June 1. The team's decision to move Garrett had fueled speculation of a potential roster rebuild under new head coach Todd Monken.

Ward had previously expressed his desire to remain with the Browns. "I definitely still want to be here," Ward said last month at a celebrity softball tournament. "But things aren't lost. It's still Ohio against the world. I could get traded, but I don't look too much into that stuff. It's the nature of the game... but I love playing for the Cleveland Browns. I want to be here."

Ward, who will approach his age 30 season, has spent his entire eight-year NFL career with the Browns since being selected fourth overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. He is a five-time Pro Bowl selection, most recently in the 2025 season, during which he recorded 39 total tackles, including 29 solo, one interception, and nine passes defended.
