Former NBA player Delonte West was knocked out just 38 seconds into the first round of his boxing debut against Michael Beasley on Friday night at the Brand Risk 16 event in Miami. The fight was stopped by the referee after West was knocked down and unable to recover.

The quick TKO prompted immediate concern and backlash on social media, with many questioning why West, who has publicly struggled with substance abuse and mental health issues, was cleared to compete.

West, 43, who played eight seasons in the NBA, came out aggressively but appeared unbalanced. Beasley, 37, landed a clean right hand that ended the bout. The broadcast experienced a moment of confusion when the ring announcer incorrectly declared West the winner, further drawing criticism.

West has had a documented history of personal struggles since his NBA career ended in 2012. These have included battles with substance abuse, bipolar disorder, and homelessness. In January of this year, West was arrested in Fairfax, Virginia, on a charge of robbery for allegedly taking $23.

Streamer Adin Ross, who organized the event, stated during the broadcast that West was compensated well for his participation and that he was happy to offer him an opportunity. However, viewers and fans widely condemned the exhibition match as exploitative, citing West's vulnerable circumstances.

West has had a number of run-ins with the law since retiring from basketball back in 2015
