Brisbane Broncos player Deine Mariner is set to return to action this weekend against the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, less than a full season after a severe thigh injury led to limb-saving surgery.

Mariner was initially diagnosed with a corked thigh, but the condition developed into acute compartment syndrome. This required a complex surgical procedure, involving a 45cm incision from his hip to his knee, to relieve pressure on the muscle. The surgery involved a gradual process of closing the wound over time as the swelling subsided.

Despite the severity of the injury, Mariner, 26, maintained a positive outlook and anticipated a return to training within eight weeks. His recovery has progressed ahead of schedule, with his return now coming significantly earlier than the initially expected late July timeframe.

"The problem is the muscle bulges out because it is under pressure," doctor Matt Hislop explained at the time of the surgery. "The issue is you have to close it up again. You can't close it up too soon, otherwise it will just happen again."

Mariner's return comes at a critical juncture for the Broncos, who need to win their remaining nine games to have a chance at making the playoffs. The team has recently suffered seven consecutive defeats, including a loss to the Sydney Roosters. Head coach Michael Maguire expressed confidence in his team's resilience, stating, "I wouldn't say it's an uphill battle with the team I've got here. People can say whatever they like, but the belief I have in this group and the journey I've had with this group tells me they're a great group. If you fight like that, we'll let that do the talking."

The team hopes Mariner's return will provide the spark needed to improve their performance and defend their title.
