According to talkSPORT, the decision was reviewed by VAR, which determined that Rice's action did not meet the threshold for violent conduct. The incident was characterized as petulant, with the yellow card considered sufficient punishment. A red card would have resulted in a three-match ban for Rice, causing him to miss upcoming fixtures against Leeds, Nottingham Forest, and Everton.
Former FIFA referee and refs' chief Keith Hackett suggested that Rice was fortunate not to have been sent off. Speaking to Football Insider, Hackett compared the incident to a previous situation involving Phil Foden and Bruno Fernandes, arguing that both instances could have warranted red cards for violent conduct. Hackett called for a review of such incidents to clarify the officiating standards.
