DeBoer Unleashes Sideline Tirade After Player's Costly Penalty
Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer was seen aggressively confronting cornerback Dijon Lee Jr. following a late-game personal foul.
Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer was visibly incensed with cornerback Dijon Lee Jr. during the closing moments of Saturday's SEC matchup against Georgia. The Crimson Tide ultimately lost the game 20-17 in a tightly contested battle.
With under two and a half minutes remaining in the game, Georgia faced a third-and-2 situation near their own end zone. Lee Jr. committed a personal foul penalty that gave the Bulldogs a crucial first down, allowing them to run down the clock. Video evidence showed Lee Jr. grappling with an opponent, grabbing his jersey, then his face mask, and throwing two punches toward his face.
The penalty drew the ire of DeBoer, who was captured on the ABC broadcast yelling at Lee Jr. as the player approached the Alabama sideline. Reports indicate the coach shouted that the cornerback "just cost us the damn game."
Georgia had just taken a 20-17 lead with a field goal approximately five minutes prior. Alabama had an opportunity to equalize or take the lead but failed to convert after an incomplete pass, which was not flagged for pass interference, drawing criticism online. A subsequent sack pushed the Crimson Tide out of field goal range, giving Georgia possession back. The Bulldogs then secured a critical first down with a 17-yard pass before Lee Jr.'s penalty effectively sealed the game for Georgia.
