David Jones, a 6-foot-tall lineman weighing 425 pounds, has become the heaviest player in college football for the 2026 season at Mississippi Valley State University. Known affectionately as 'Big Dave,' Jones's journey to the Delta Devils defensive line is marked by perseverance after facing challenges in finding collegiate opportunities.
Jones, originally from Augusta, Georgia, was a standout offensive guard and defensive tackle at Hephzibah High School, earning First Team All-Region honors his senior year in 2021. However, the impact of COVID-19 on college rosters and limited scholarship availability led him to a club program. When coaching changes and closed doors stalled his recruitment, Jones returned home and took a job with UPS, but he continued to pursue his football aspirations.
He and his family systematically reached out to college programs, emailing coaches from Division I to Division III institutions across multiple states every Sunday. Jones strategically included clips of himself scoring three touchdowns as a goal-line back in his highlight reel to gauge coaches' attention.
His unique skill set, which included running plays despite his size, eventually caught the eye of Livingstone College assistant coach Mark Williams. Jones then transferred to the North Carolina school, where he was listed at 350 pounds. He scored three rushing touchdowns during his time there, generating attention on social media. This success paved the way for his current move to Mississippi Valley State, a Division I (FCS) program.
"All I know is, okay, Dave, you gotta go bet on yourself," Jones told HBCU Gameday. "I'm just trying to really go feed my family. Football, really a business right now."
Mississippi Valley State now lists Jones at 425 pounds, surpassing former heaviest player Desmond Watson, who weighed 449 pounds at his NFL Pro Day. Watson was signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but was released without playing in a game after not practicing. He later signed with the XFL's DC Defenders but has not appeared on an NFL roster this training camp.
Jones is preparing for his first season with the Delta Devils, who begin their season on Thursday against Nicholls State. The team is scheduled to play at Soldier Field in Chicago in Week 3 as part of the Chicago Football Classic against Lincoln.
