Manchester United Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher directly addressed an "abusive" fan who was reportedly angered by players refusing to stop and sign autographs following the team's 4-0 Champions League victory over Sabah at Old Trafford.
Footage circulating on social media captured Fletcher approaching a group of supporters gathered near the team buses after the match on Thursday night. Fletcher singled out one individual, taking issue with their language directed at the players as they departed.
"Hey listen, it doesn't matter you can't speak like that," Fletcher was heard saying, an intervention that drew cheers from other fans. He then pointed to the fan, stating, "You are the reason people don't sign, you are the reason people don't sign."
Supporters responded by chanting "legend, legend" in Fletcher's honor as he walked away. Fletcher, 42, has been the head coach of Manchester United's U-18 team since July of the previous year. He previously served a brief two-game interim management spell in January after Ruben Amorim's dismissal.
During his playing career, Fletcher made 342 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 24 goals. He was part of the squads that won five Premier League titles, the Champions League, and the FA Cup.
Manchester United secured a comfortable 4-0 win against Sabah, with first-half goals from Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, and Benjamin Sesko, followed by a second-half strike from Lisandro Martinez. This marked a return to Champions League action for the club.
This incident occurs amidst broader concerns raised by Manchester United about professional autograph hunters. The club has reportedly grown increasingly frustrated with what is described as "industrial-scale autograph harvesting" at Old Trafford, where signed memorabilia is subsequently sold. Former teammate Patrice Evra has also shared anecdotes, recalling Sir Alex Ferguson once reprimanding players for not signing autographs during a pre-season tour.
The team's focus now shifts to the upcoming Manchester derby on Sunday.
