Daron Payne Suffers Season-Ending Injury, Washington Commanders Lose Key Defensive Tackle
The Pro Bowl defensive tackle sustained a Jones fracture during practice, further challenging the Commanders' already struggling defense.
The Washington Commanders will be without Pro Bowl defensive tackle Daron Payne for the remainder of the season, after he sustained a season-ending Jones fracture at practice on Friday, according to ESPN.
Payne, a cornerstone of the Commanders' defensive line since being selected 13th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, has been a significant presence since his arrival from Alabama. Across six games this season, he recorded 14 tackles and one sack. In his nine-year career, Payne has accumulated 446 tackles and 38 sacks over 136 games. He has been a notably durable player, missing no more than two games in any single season and playing a full 16 or 17 games six times.
The loss of Payne is a considerable blow to the Commanders, who already possess one of the league's worst scoring defenses, allowing 28.7 points per game, second only to the Arizona Cardinals. The team's run defense, which ranked 14th in the NFL by allowing 100.5 rushing yards per game, is also expected to suffer without Payne's presence.
The Commanders currently hold a 1-4-1 record. Their upcoming schedule includes matchups against the Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams, and New York Giants. These games will be critical in determining the team's trajectory for the remainder of the season, with a challenging road ahead without one of their defensive leaders.
