Daniil Medvedev's History of On-Court Controversies

Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev, a Grand Slam champion and one of the world's top athletes, has once again drawn controversy after being disqualified from the China Open semi-final. The incident occurred on Monday when, in a moment of frustration after losing a point, Medvedev struck a ball into the stands, inadvertently hitting a spectator who was seen receiving medical attention.

This latest episode adds to Medvedev's chequered career, marked by a pattern of dramatic on-court meltdowns, confrontations with umpires, and aggressive displays. Born in Moscow in 1996, Medvedev's father, a successful businessman, supported his early tennis development. The young Medvedev also pursued diverse interests, including music, chess, and languages, and relocated to France to further his tennis ambitions. Despite a seemingly privileged upbringing, Medvedev has developed a reputation for volatile behavior on court.

History of On-Court Incidents

Medvedev's clashes with officials have been a recurring theme. In June 2017, during a match at Wimbledon, he repeatedly argued with chair umpire Mariana Alves over calls. Frustrated, he emptied his wallet and threw coins towards the umpire's chair, leading to a $14,500 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct.

His interactions with ball kids have also been contentious. At the 2019 US Open, after the crowd turned against him, Medvedev snatched a towel from a ball kid and shouted in their direction. He also lobbed his racket towards the umpire shortly after.

Confrontations with Fans

During the same 2019 US Open match, Medvedev made an obscene gesture towards the booing crowd and later taunted them, suggesting their energy would fuel his victories. This resulted in a $9,000 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct and a visible obscenity.

In 2022, at the Australian Open, Medvedev faced backlash from local supporters, whom he accused of having a "low IQ" amid a hostile reception. He also expressed that the crowd's behavior had diminished his passion for the sport.

Mid-Match Meltdowns

Medvedev is known for his explosive temper. Earlier this year at the Monte-Carlo Masters, after a double bagel loss to Matteo Berrettini, he smashed his racquet seven times on the clay court and then discarded it, incurring a €6,000 fine.

At the ATP Finals in 2024, he smashed his racquet against his seat during a defeat and later threw it into the air, breaking a courtside microphone and receiving a points penalty. This led to threats of retirement from the match.

Further incidents at the Australian Open in 2025 included smashing a net camera with his racket, leading to fines totaling $76,000, plus an additional $30,000 for the damaged camera. He also faced further penalties for "repeated tennis racquet misuse."

Perhaps his most infamous meltdown occurred at the 2025 US Open. When a photographer walked onto the court during a crucial match point, the umpire awarded the opponent a second serve due to the delay. Medvedev unleashed a tirade against the umpire and addressed a courtside camera with critical remarks. After losing the match, he smashed his racquet on his chair, incurring another $42,500 fine.

Medvedev's history of such incidents suggests a continued pattern of behavior that frequently places him at the center of controversy in the tennis world.
