Daniil Medvedev was disqualified from the China Open after striking a spectator with a ball hit in frustration. The incident occurred during his semi-final match against Novak Djokovic.
Medvedev, known for his passionate on-court demeanor, hit a ball into the stands after losing a point. The errant shot struck a fan, who was seen holding their eye and subsequently received medical attention.
Following the incident, Medvedev was defaulted from the tournament, a penalty for a serious rule violation or misconduct. Djokovic was therefore advanced to the final.
At the time of the disqualification, Medvedev was trailing Djokovic 5-7, 3-5.
Medvedev did not dispute the decision and left the court after shaking hands with his opponent.
