Dana Altman Retires After 16 Seasons as Oregon Ducks Men's Basketball Coach

Dana Altman, who coached the Oregon men's basketball team for 16 seasons, has announced his retirement. The 68-year-old coach called stepping away from the sideline "truly painful" in a statement released by the school on Wednesday.

Altman took over the Oregon program in 2010 and amassed a record of 382 wins over his tenure, leading the Ducks to nine NCAA Tournaments and a Final Four appearance. Assistant coach Tony Stubblefield will take over Altman's responsibilities on an interim basis for the upcoming season.

"I've loved every minute of coaching here, and stepping away is difficult and truly painful," Altman said. "I love coaching, it's what I know best and what I've been fortunate enough to do for almost five decades. It's been the honor of my life to coach the Ducks."

Oregon football coach Dan Lanning praised Altman, calling him "a great mentor" and "a Hall of Fame coach with what he’s been able to accomplish."

Altman's retirement comes after a challenging season for the Ducks, who finished with a 12-20 record. The program also faced significant roster turnover, with nine players entering the transfer portal and three graduating after the season.

Oregon athletic director Rob Mullins acknowledged Altman's contributions, stating, "Winning 382 games over 16 years, including making nine NCAA Tournaments and a Final Four, is an incredible track record. But the record book tells only part of the story. Dana and Reva have given so much of themselves to this university and to the young men who played for him, and we thank him for all his contributions to Oregon student-athletes, the game of basketball, and the University of Oregon."

Stubblefield has a history with Altman, having served two stints as an assistant coach at Oregon. He previously left to become the head coach at DePaul from 2021 to 2024 before returning to the Ducks.
