Dan Quinn Smashes Headset in Frustration After Commanders' Late-Game Blunder
Washington's inability to manage the clock in overtime results in a tie against the Giants and a furious reaction from the head coach.
Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn was visibly irate on the sideline after a critical clock management error by quarterback Jayden Daniels in overtime led to a 27-27 tie against the New York Giants on Sunday.
With 12 seconds remaining in the overtime period and the Commanders seemingly poised to attempt a game-winning field goal, Daniels took the snap on second-and-eight and scrambled in the backfield before intentionally going to the ground. However, with no timeouts remaining and only eight seconds on the clock, the Commanders were unable to regroup and spike the ball before time expired. Wide receivers were still far downfield, making a quick recovery impossible.
The broadcast captured Quinn ripping off his headset and throwing it to the ground in apparent disbelief and anger.
The costly mistake drew immediate criticism on social media, including from NBA legend Earvin 'Magic' Johnson, a minority owner of the Commanders. Johnson expressed his dismay on X, stating, "I'm in total disbelief my Commanders had such poor clock management in today's overtime game against the Giants. All we had to do was kick the field goal and we would have won the game!"
Many observers pointed to Daniels, questioning his awareness of the team's timeout situation. Comments on social media highlighted the perceived lack of game awareness, with one user calling it "one of the dumbest mistakes ever."
Daniels addressed the incident in his postgame press conference, accepting responsibility for the team's situational football shortcomings. "We just gotta be better, like, overall. Like, the whole team with just situational football," Daniels said. "You know, we had a chance early in the game to finish the game - offensively, defensively - and we didn't capitalize on that. And then we still have the opportunity at the end of the game to win the game, and we didn't do that. It's not a win, so not really feeling that one."
When asked specifically about the clock management gaffe, Daniels added, "Yeah, we just gotta communicate that. That's the whole thing. Like I said, it starts with me communicating to the whole offense in the huddle. And I think everybody would say that, top down. Just gotta be better. Ultimately, it's on me."
The tie against the Giants in Week 5 leaves the Commanders with a 2-2-1 record on the season.
