Dan Brown, a 31-year-old golfer from Yorkshire, is among the leading contenders at the 154th Open Championship after a strong opening round. Brown shot a four-under-par 66, placing him one stroke behind American leader Jackson Suber after the first day of play at Royal Birkdale.
Brown's performance offers a glimmer of hope for English golf fans, as no English player has won The Open for 34 years, since Sir Nick Faldo's victory at Muirfield in 1990. The last English winner on English soil was Tony Jacklin in 1969 at Royal Lytham & St Annes.
"It's only Thursday but hopefully I'm in a sort of similar area on the leaderboard come Sunday," Brown stated, expressing optimism about his position. He capitalized on favorable early scoring conditions on the links course.
Other English golfers also made solid starts. Tommy Fleetwood, a local favorite hailing from nearby Southport, recovered from a difficult opening round when Birkdale last hosted the Open in 2017. This year, Fleetwood secured a one-under-par 69, giving him a platform to build upon for the remaining three rounds.
The first-round leaderboard saw Jackson Suber in the lead at five-under-par. Following closely were Dan Brown at four-under, and Im Sung-jae from South Korea. Several other players, including Belgium's Thomas Detry, Scotland's Robert MacIntyre, and Italy's Francesco Molinari, were positioned at three-under-par.
