Dale Earnhardt Jr. became emotional Saturday as his driver, Carson Kvapil, earned his first career victory in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series Pennzoil 250 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Kvapil, driving the No. 1 Chevrolet Camaro for Earnhardt's JR Motorsports, led 23 laps of the 100-lap race. This win followed five second-place finishes for Kvapil, including at the previous event in Atlanta.
"Oh, man; It's been a long time coming," Earnhardt said, his voice catching. "He's like a son almost. Y'know, you work with these guys for so long, and you work so hard... you just want them to have success."
The Pennzoil 250 featured several Cup Series regulars, with Ross Chastain and Chase Elliott both finishing in the top five. Chastain led the most laps, with 31 circuits out front.
Earnhardt emphasized the importance of wins for drivers in motorsports. "He's got to win to keep going," Earnhardt stated. "You've got to win if you want to stay in this deal, and, man, he came close (before)."
JR Motorsports is the most successful team in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series' history. Kvapil's victory marks a significant achievement for both the driver and the team owner. Kvapil celebrated his win on the track's iconic Yard of Bricks alongside Earnhardt.
