Cuthbert Returns for Scotland in World Cup Play-off Victory

Erin Cuthbert expressed relief and joy upon her return to the pitch, marking her first appearance of the season in Scotland's decisive 2-0 victory against the Czech Republic in a Women's World Cup play-off match. The win puts Scotland in a strong position heading into the second leg at home.

Cuthbert, who also captains Chelsea, had been sidelined with a knee injury, preventing her from playing for her club this season. She entered the match in Pardubice as a substitute. Scotland's second goal came from fellow substitute Claire Emslie, after captain Caroline Weir had scored the opening goal.

"It's so good," Cuthbert told BBC Scotland. "It's been such a long summer. It's always great to come on and play for my country again - I'll never take it for granted when I get a serious injury."

Describing the recovery process, Cuthbert detailed the significant physical and mental challenges. "I'm just glad to get back on a football pitch. The relief, the amount of self-doubt that you have, the amount of stress - am I going to be back to the same level, how am I going to perform, is my knee going to be alright? All those things run through your head."

She further elaborated on the severity of the injury, stating, "It was a bad one. I was in crutches and a brace for the best part of a month. I lost a fair amount of muscle and over the summer I was trying to rebuild all of that again. It's been a really, really hard journey."

With this first-leg advantage, Scotland is now well-positioned for the return match in Paisley, where they are likely to face Sweden in the next stage of qualification.
