Cristiano Ronaldo Suspended by Portugal Amid Disciplinary Investigation
Star forward left national team camp after dispute with coach Jorge Jesus over playing time.
Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by Portugal after leaving the national team camp following a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus. The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the forward.
The suspension stems from an incident last month when Ronaldo was an unused substitute during Portugal's 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway. Ronaldo reportedly felt that a plan for him to come off the bench was not followed by Jesus.
Prior to Portugal's subsequent match against Denmark, Ronaldo is said to have agreed on an eight-point statement for Jesus to read at a press conference to clarify the situation. However, reports indicate that Jesus deviated from the agreed statement, leading Ronaldo to leave the camp. Ronaldo subsequently released a statement accusing Jesus of breaking his word on two occasions.
Although Ronaldo has since apologized to his teammates, the FPF has launched an investigation into his conduct. The federation stated that "disciplinary proceedings were initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo pursuant to a decision by the Non-Professional Section dated October 9, 2026, aimed at determining whether the events reported on October 7, 2026, warrant disciplinary action." The player faces a non-automatic preventive suspension while the investigation unfolds, and he could miss the upcoming international break in November.
"Without prejudice to the automatic preventive suspension to which he was subject prior to the initiation of proceedings, a non-automatic preventive suspension of the player was ordered, and the case was designated as urgent," the FPF statement continued. "The case was referred to the FPF Disciplinary Investigation Committee on October 10, 2026, with the proceedings remaining confidential until the conclusion of the investigation."
Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by Portugal after walking out of the squad during the international window.
