Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by Portugal after leaving the international squad following a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus. The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has opened a disciplinary investigation into the player's conduct.

The incident reportedly stems from Ronaldo's reaction to being an unused substitute in Portugal's 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway in September. Ronaldo claimed that Jesus had broken promises regarding his playing time.

According to reports, a plan was agreed for Ronaldo to play for 30 minutes in the Norway match, but he was not brought off the bench. Following this, Ronaldo is said to have left the Portugal camp before their match against Denmark.

Despite an apology to his teammates, the FPF announced on October 10, 2026, that disciplinary proceedings had been initiated. The statement indicated that a non-automatic preventive suspension had been ordered for the player, and the case was designated as urgent.

"Disciplinary proceedings were initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo pursuant to a decision by the Non-Professional Section dated October 9, 2026, aimed at determining whether the events reported on October 7, 2026, warrant disciplinary action," the FPF stated. "Without prejudice to the automatic preventive suspension to which he was subject prior to the initiation of proceedings, a non-automatic preventive suspension of the player was ordered, and the case was designated as urgent."

The case has been referred to the FPF Disciplinary Investigation Committee, and the proceedings will remain confidential until the investigation concludes. Ronaldo could potentially miss Portugal's entire international break in November.
