Cristiano Ronaldo's Sister Suggests International Career Is Over Amidst Manager Dispute

Cristiano Ronaldo's international career with Portugal appears to be nearing its end, according to his sister, Elma Aveiro. The Portuguese superstar left the national team camp during the recent international break due to what he described as "broken promises" from head coach Jorge Jesus. This incident followed Ronaldo being benched during Portugal's 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway.

Following his departure, the Portuguese Football Federation suspended the forward. Although Ronaldo has expressed a desire to rejoin the team, Aveiro voiced skepticism about a potential return in comments made at a book launch event in Lisbon. "It's more likely a no than a yes," she stated, adding that both Ronaldo and Jesus appeared to be hurt by the situation. "When we're betrayed, it's very difficult to go back to normal."

Aveiro expressed sadness over the public's reaction, feeling that Ronaldo's past contributions were being overlooked. "My feeling is one of sadness because the Portuguese people unfortunately forget what has already been done and think that things should be done differently now," she said. "I'm speechless, it's very difficult to see my brother go through this. He is one of the people who least deserve this."

Ronaldo's mother, Dolores Aveiro, had previously voiced similar sentiments, asserting that her son was not being valued and that he left the team "through the back door" instead of a more dignified exit.

The dispute reportedly stemmed from an agreement between Ronaldo and Jesus for the player to enter a match against Norway as a substitute for the final 30 minutes. However, Jesus did not bring Ronaldo on, leading the player to believe the coach had gone back on his word.

Prior to Portugal's subsequent match, Ronaldo allegedly agreed to an eight-point statement for Jesus to read at a press conference to quell speculation about demands for more playing time. Sources indicate that Jesus deviated from this prepared statement, prompting Ronaldo to leave the camp and later release a lengthy statement accusing the manager of backtracking twice.

Despite an apology to his teammates, Ronaldo faces a suspension while the FPF conducts an investigation into his conduct. The disciplinary proceedings were initiated on October 9, 2026, with a non-automatic preventive suspension ordered. The case has been referred to the FPF Disciplinary Investigation Committee and remains confidential pending the investigation's conclusion. Ronaldo could miss the entire November international break.
