Cristiano Ronaldo has indicated that his current year in professional football may be his last. In an exclusive interview with Vogue, the Portuguese soccer star stated, "this is probably my last year of football."
Ronaldo, whose contract with Al Nassr extends until June 2027, made this revelation following Portugal's elimination in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. While he had previously announced that the recent World Cup would be his last, he had not specified a retirement date from the sport altogether.
"I want to leave a spectacular legacy," Ronaldo told Vogue. "I have my future all mapped out. I have so many things to keep me busy that to tell you just one thing is hard. Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one."
He added that he plans to "have more fun, travel more, watch and play padel, which I really like, and continue to enjoy what I’ve earned — what we’ve earned. Because after all it’s been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice."
Following Portugal's defeat to Spain in the World Cup, Ronaldo reflected on his performance and his commitment to the sport. "The day will come [when I retire from international football]," he said. "But I’ll be honest. Whatever happens [Monday], Cristiano will leave with a clear conscience, not 100%, but 1,000%. Because I’ve given everything in football. I don’t need it, I have a good life, but it’s about passion. I play football because I love it… You have to enjoy every day. And I’ve scored three goals [at this World Cup], I’m not doing too badly, right?"
Ronaldo, who is reportedly a billionaire per Forbes, did not secure a World Cup title before his stated intention to retire. His career in international football for Portugal began in 2006, and his participation in the 2030 World Cup, which Portugal is co-hosting with Spain and Morocco, now appears unlikely. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward scored three goals during the 2026 World Cup.
He described the recent World Cup as "fantastic" and "emotionally, the best," citing the passion of the people as a memorable aspect.
This announcement comes shortly after Ronaldo's marriage to his longtime partner Georgina Rodríguez on August 11. The couple held an intimate ceremony at their home in Portugal, attended by their five children. Rodríguez mentioned they opted for a quiet ceremony before a larger celebration to do something more "unusual" for the family.
