Cristiano Ronaldo Faces Potential Six-Month Ban from Portugal National Team
Star player leaves training camp after reported dispute with manager, prompting intervention from the Prime Minister.
Cristiano Ronaldo could face a suspension of up to six months from the Portugal national team after departing the team's training camp following a dispute with manager Jorge Jesus. The 41-year-old star flew to Madrid on his private jet after missing a third consecutive training session and leaving the stadium in Copenhagen, where Portugal is scheduled to play Denmark.
Ronaldo confirmed via Instagram that he left the team's camp due to comments made by Jesus during a press conference. The manager had stated that Ronaldo would not start the match against Denmark, although he insisted there was no issue between them. However, reports in Portugal suggest that Ronaldo's departure could lead to a suspension if he is deemed to have 'abandoned' the team, according to the Portuguese Football Federation's disciplinary code.
The code states that any player who 'unjustifiably abandons or fails to appear for training, a match, or any activity of the national teams' can be sanctioned with a suspension of one to six months.
Ronaldo's exit has fueled speculation about his potential retirement from international duty. The situation has also drawn the attention of the country's Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, who has reportedly discussed the matter with Ronaldo, Jesus, and the head of the Portuguese FA, Pedro Proença. The nature of Montenegro's intervention remains unclear.
Jorge Jesus, speaking before the Denmark game, maintained a clear conscience regarding the situation, attributing the events to a hectic schedule. Meanwhile, footage showed Jesus and Proença being booed by a small group of fans outside the team's hotel in Copenhagen.
Ronaldo's sister, Elma Aveiro, publicly criticized the treatment of her brother, suggesting that Portuguese people 'deserve mediocrity' due to their perceived envy and ignorance towards the star. Spanish journalist Edu Aguirre, a friend of Ronaldo, claimed the player felt 'betrayed' by Jesus, alleging that Jesus had apologized privately for how the situation was handled but then made contradictory public statements. Aguirre described the manager's actions as a betrayal after promising to clarify and resolve the matter publicly.
