Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Kirk Cousins and defensive star Maxx Crosby engaged in a heated exchange during a training camp practice Friday in Henderson, Nevada. The incident occurred when Crosby made contact with Cousins' arm twice during a team period.
Following the second contact, Cousins, who is typically reserved, charged at Crosby, grabbing his jersey and exchanging words. Teammates quickly intervened to separate the two players. Cousins remained on the field to finish the drive with the first-team offense, while Crosby was sent to the sideline.
Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak addressed the scuffle, noting that such incidents are not uncommon during training camp. "Those are two leaders of our team going at it, so that is part of camp," Kubiak said. "Obviously, if you fight in a game and throw a punch in game, then you're out of the game. So we've got to be smart and treat it like a game."
Tight end Michael Mayer commented on the situation, expressing a desire for his quarterback to show intensity while also avoiding penalties. "We don't want to be throwing punches, but I think on any padded day of camp, there's going to be some tussles," Mayer said. "That's our starting quarterback right now, and you want him to defend your team and you want him to have some edge to him, which he does... I don't want him getting thrown out. I don't want him getting a flag. Nothing like that, but you've got to be able to defend yourself."
Despite the team drafting Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick, the Raiders named Cousins as the starting quarterback for training camp. He has received the majority of first-team repetitions and is expected to be the Raiders' starting quarterback when they open their season against the Miami Dolphins in Week 1.
