Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was substituted due to an injury in the 71st minute of the World Cup quarterfinal match against Spain on Friday at Los Angeles Stadium. Courtois appeared to sustain an injury to his right leg.

Senne Lammens replaced Courtois, becoming the first goalkeeper other than Courtois to play for Belgium in a World Cup since Geert De Vlieger in 2002. At the time of the substitution, the match was tied 1-1. Spain's Fabian Ruiz scored the opening goal in the 30th minute, and Charles De Ketelaere equalized for Belgium in the 41st minute.

Shortly after Lammens entered the game, he made a mistake that led to Spain taking a 2-1 lead. Mikel Merino's shot was not contained by the backup goalkeeper, and the rebound found the back of the net.

No official update on the severity of Courtois' injury or his availability for the remainder of the tournament has been provided by the Belgian medical staff.
