Conor McGregor's highly anticipated return to the UFC octagon on Saturday in Las Vegas ended abruptly with a TKO loss and a suspected torn ACL, compounded by taunts from his opponent's family.
Max Holloway secured a victory after McGregor appeared to injure his knee while attempting a jumping roundhouse kick early in the first round. Following the stoppage, Holloway's son, Rush, was heard yelling, "Who's your daddy? Who's your daddy, now?" from his cage-side seat, while his stepmother, Alessa Quizon, stood nearby. McGregor had previously provoked this exchange, referring to Holloway as his "child" and claiming he "son'd Max" in their prior encounter 13 years ago.
UFC announcer Joe Rogan commented on the unusual offensive maneuver, noting the significant pressure such a kick could place on a knee. "He landed with his knee in the worst position," Rogan stated.
McGregor, however, denied entering the fight with any pre-existing injuries. "I had no injury / injuries going into the fight," he wrote on X. "This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell."
Despite the suspected ACL tear, which is expected to require surgery, McGregor expressed his determination to continue fighting. "I was so sharp and so ready for this fight I cannot believe what has happened," he said. "The devil is literally staring at me right in front of my face here. I am not engaging. I will be at church tomorrow."
UFC President Dana White indicated that there were no signs of injury at the weigh-in and that the assumption among medical personnel is a "blown ACL."
McGregor's coach, John Kavanagh, also weighed in on social media, stating that the kick in question was a practiced move that had never caused issues before. "Never an issue. Knee went when he thru the very first kick. Doesn't get any worse than this."
This incident adds to a period of absence for McGregor from the UFC over the last five years, during which he has dealt with a broken leg, a broken toe, missed drug tests, and legal issues, including a civil trial verdict in November 2024 where he was found guilty of sexual assault and ordered to pay damages. He has denied these allegations.
