Conor McGregor's highly anticipated return to the UFC cage was cut short by a devastating knee injury, resulting in a first-round TKO loss to Max Holloway in Las Vegas. The fight was stopped after just one minute when it became apparent McGregor was in severe distress.

McGregor appeared to injure his knee while attempting a kick less than 10 seconds into the bout. Despite fighting on for approximately 60 more seconds, the referee halted the contest, leaving McGregor visibly bewildered as he limped from the arena.

Speculation arose following the fight that McGregor might have been carrying an injury into the bout, with footage circulating of him hopping on his foot while removing his trainers shortly before the match. However, McGregor vehemently denied these claims in a statement on X, formerly Twitter.

"My head gasket is gone. Destroyed. I had no injury / injuries going into the fight," McGregor stated. "I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell."

He added, "I was so sharp and so ready for this fight I cannot believe what has happened. The talk of me being off while walking in to the fight is nonsense. I was calm, ready, and confident. I am in shock what has taken place."

McGregor's last fight, also against Dustin Poirier in July 2021, ended similarly due to a horrific injury. This latest defeat marks his third consecutive loss and extends his winless streak to six years.

Holloway, who had previously defeated McGregor in 2013, expressed disappointment at the fight's abrupt end but suggested a trilogy bout. "Let's give it up for Connor! What an absolute animal," Holloway said. "You guys are lucky because there is going to be a Holloway v McGregor three now. Let's get that money. It is what it is. We have to run it back one time. We need one more."

The fighter's hiatus from the sport was also marked by controversy, including being found liable for sexual assault and ordered to pay $260,000 in damages in late 2024. McGregor addressed this during the pre-fight press conference, maintaining his innocence and expressing his faith.

"I am an innocent man and I will stand for my innocence until the day I go out," he said. "It stings deep but I continue to fight. I know the truth. And I know that lying lips are an abomination to the Lord. I know anything done in darkness will soon come to light, and I trust in God that it's coming."
