The Commonwealth Games women's T54 1500m final was ordered to be re-run by officials after a mass crash involving multiple athletes, leading to disappointment and criticism from the English team.
Four of the seven competitors finished the race on Wednesday night following four crashes, three overturned wheelchairs, and one disqualification. Scotland's Melanie Woods had crossed the finish line first with a Commonwealth record time of 3 minutes and 33.39 seconds. However, the following morning, athletes were informed the race would be conducted again.
England's Ellis Kottas, who was in line for a silver medal, stated her distress at the prospect of losing a medal after the incident. "While I’m lowkey traumatised if I’m going to medal I want to do so on my own merit, so I will go out and give it all I’ve got," Kottas said. "If I don’t medal so be it, I’ll still have the incredible memories of lifting that England flag."
Team England's chef de mission, Jonny Riall, voiced strong disappointment with the late decision. "We are incredibly disappointed by the late decision," Riall stated. "While there is no formal protest process available to us, we have strongly challenged the decision. The race officials did not halt the race at the time of the incident, nor was any immediate decision made to declare the race void or order a rerun. Our priority is the welfare of our athletes. We will now do everything we can do support Ellis during the extremely short turnaround."
In other Games news, Emily Campbell won gold in the weightlifting event. She lifted a combined total of 278kg, consisting of 115kg in the Snatch and 163kg in the Clean and Jerk, setting a Commonwealth record. Campbell expressed her excitement for her performance and her upcoming appearance on Celebrity MasterChef, viewing it as another platform to promote weightlifting.
Campbell, 32, is contemplating her future in the sport, with the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics in mind. "We've got to look at the practicalities of LA," she said. "We have to do a slightly different qualification process to other sports. We've got to look at that and we can get our body through. If I go to LA, I would want to be in contention for a medal, so we want to make sure that that’s feasible. We just have to be very sensible about decisions and hopefully you’ll see me there. But for now, we enjoy what happened."
