Columbus Crew Sacks Federico Higuain After Sexist Remark to Female Referee

Columbus Crew has dismissed Federico Higuain, brother of former Chelsea and Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain, from his role as reserve team manager following a sexist comment made to a female referee. The incident occurred after his team's 1-0 loss to Huntsville City in the MLS Pro League.

Higuain, 41, reportedly grabbed the referee's hand and told her, "Don't forget this is a man's game." This action led to his ejection from the match and a two-game suspension from the MLS. However, the club decided to terminate his employment.

"We determined it's in the best interest of our club, players and support staff to dismiss Federico Higuain from his responsibilities," Columbus Crew general manager Issa Tall stated. "After conversations this week and further assessing the past month, our club's standards of what's expected from a leader for one of our teams have not been met."

The Professional Soccer Referees Association criticized the MLS's initial punishment, arguing it was too lenient. The association highlighted that Higuain committed "two deliberate acts of physical abuse and sexism against a female official" and that his "demeaning, sexist remark" was unacceptable. They emphasized that female officials deserve the same respect and safe working environment as their male counterparts.

Federico Higuain had a playing career that included stints with Besiktas and Independiente. He joined Columbus Crew as a player in 2012, remaining until 2019. He later played alongside his brother at Inter Miami before returning to Columbus to coach their reserve team in January 2025.
