Colts Receiver Alec Pierce Placed on Injured Reserve After Heel Aggravation

The Indianapolis Colts have placed wide receiver Alec Pierce on injured reserve due to an aggravated left heel injury. The move was announced by head coach Shane Steichen on Wednesday, sidelining the team's top receiver for at least four weeks. Pierce sustained the injury last week in Kansas City, forcing him to leave the game.

This latest setback follows a history of injury issues for Pierce. He underwent surgery on his left ankle and heel in March, after signing a four-year, $116 million contract extension. He had been on the physically unable to perform list during the offseason and was activated in late August. Despite a cautious ramp-up in activity, the heel injury emerged last week, compounding previous concerns about his left ankle, which troubled him last season.

"Like I said, we limited him in practice, working those first two weeks into the first game," Steichen said. "We had limited his reps in Week 1. Injuries happen. You know, you never want to see it, but we would never have put him on the field if we didn't feel good about it." Steichen indicated that Pierce had met all his rehabilitation benchmarks before being cleared to play and had caught four passes for 61 yards in the season opener against Baltimore.

To address Pierce's absence, the Colts signed veteran receiver Darius Slayton on Tuesday. Slayton previously played with Colts quarterback Daniel Jones for five-and-a-half seasons with the New York Giants. "I really enjoyed playing alongside him," Slayton said. "He's a good quarterback. He's smart, he can spin it, and you know as a person, I feel like we kind of have a similar DNA, football DNA. We're both just football guys."

Quarterback Daniel Jones expressed sympathy for Pierce's situation, acknowledging his importance to the team's offense. "Definitely feel for him," Jones said. "He's worked really hard to get back and a tough break the other night. He's, obviously, a great player, has meant a lot to this team since I got here and has done a ton for the offense. So we'll have to have guys step up in his spot."

With Pierce and Ashton Dulin also sidelined for the overtime loss to the Chiefs last weekend, third-year receiver Josh Downs is expected to step into a primary role. He will be joined by Slayton and six-time Pro Bowler Keenan Allen, who was signed by the Colts in mid-August and is currently facing a potential suspension related to an arrest on drunken driving charges.
