College Football Shaken by Consecutive Weeks of Top-Ranked Upsets
Georgia and Texas suffer losses to unranked opponents, extending a 36-year-old streak of No. 1 teams falling in back-to-back weeks.
College football experienced a weekend of significant upheaval as multiple highly ranked teams suffered unexpected defeats, continuing a trend that has not been seen in 36 years. The No. 1 ranked Georgia Bulldogs were stunned at home by unranked rival Auburn, losing 27-24 after a late comeback by the Tigers. This result leaves the Southeastern Conference (SEC) without an undefeated team as the season progresses into late October.
The Bulldogs' loss follows the shocking upset of Texas the previous week, when the then-No. 1 ranked Longhorns were defeated by the unranked Oklahoma Sooners. This marks the first time since 1990 that the nation's top-ranked team has fallen to an unranked opponent in two consecutive weeks, a streak that was last seen 36 years ago.
Adding to the chaos, the Texas Longhorns experienced another defeat against an unranked opponent this past Saturday, falling 27-24 to the Florida Gators. Elsewhere, No. 6 ranked Alabama suffered a significant upset, losing 26-10 to Tennessee. This marks the first time since 2013 that the Crimson Tide have lost two games in a row. Furthermore, it was the first time since October 1996 that Georgia, Alabama, and Texas all lost on the same day.
Georgia, entering the weekend as the SEC's sole remaining undefeated team after a previous victory over Alabama, appeared poised to solidify their standing. However, Auburn managed to dictate play and secure a dramatic victory with a walk-off field goal from kicker Alex McPherson, handing Georgia its first home loss in years and significantly altering the conference title landscape.
