College Football Player Suffers Gruesome Leg Injury After Referee Collision
East Carolina freshman David Coleman Jr. was transported to the hospital with a suspected fractured fibula following an unusual on-field incident.
East Carolina freshman David Coleman Jr. was rushed to the hospital after suffering a significant leg injury on Saturday during the Pirates' 17-9 victory over Temple at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. The incident occurred between plays when an official, reportedly losing his footing, collided with Coleman.
A video clip that circulated widely on social media captured the moment the referee ran towards the players, slipped, and inadvertently fell onto Coleman. The safety appeared to get his leg trapped between the official and a teammate. Coleman was assisted off the field by the team's medical staff and immediately taken to a local hospital.
Reports indicate that Coleman is believed to have sustained a fractured fibula, an injury that is likely to end his freshman season. The three-star recruit from Kingsland, Georgia, has been a freshman for East Carolina.
In the game itself, running back T.J. Engleman Jr. was a key contributor for the Pirates, rushing for 107 yards and scoring a touchdown in the second half. Engleman's early third-quarter touchdown extended East Carolina's lead to 17-3. The Pirates' defense also played a crucial role, with multiple interceptions by Zyeir Gamble, Angelo Ross, and Ashton Levells-Mitchell thwarting Temple's comeback attempts. The win improved East Carolina's season record to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Their next game is scheduled for Friday night at home against South Florida.
