MicahJo Barnett, a junior running back for William Jewell College, died Saturday after suffering a medical emergency during the team's season-opening football game. The college in Liberty, Missouri, confirmed Barnett's passing approximately two hours after he collapsed on the sideline.

Paramedics responded to the incident around 12:20 p.m. on Saturday and transported Barnett to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Barnett, who was the leading rusher for the Division 2 team last season, had scored a touchdown earlier in the game.

Video circulating on social media captured Barnett's final touchdown and subsequent celebration with teammates. He reportedly experienced "seizure-like symptoms" on the sideline with 4:32 left in the first quarter, at which point the game was suspended. Teammates were seen consoling each other as the situation unfolded.

William Jewell College issued a statement mourning the loss of Barnett, a junior business administration major and member of the football program. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Micah Jo's family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss," the statement read. The college announced a vigil would be held on campus Saturday evening and that funeral arrangements would be shared when available.

Their opponents, Fort Lewis College, also extended condolences to the William Jewell community. "Fort Lewis College Athletics extends its deepest condolences to the William Jewell College community following the tragic passing of a Cardinals football student-athlete, MicahJo Barnett," said Director of Athletics Shawn Jakubowski. "Our hearts are with his family, friends, teammates, coaches, and everyone at William Jewell during this incredibly difficult time."

Barnett, originally from Shawnee Mission, Kansas, was one of seven siblings. He had a notable high school career, leading Liberty North High School to a state championship as a senior and earning All-Conference and All-State honors. In his freshman year at William Jewell, he appeared in eight games, and as a sophomore, he started five games, accumulating 366 rushing yards before a season-ending injury. He was also recognized with 2025-26 Academic All-GLVC honors.
