Despite signing a contract extension in January, Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur might be facing scrutiny for his team's performance in high-stakes games, according to analyst Colin Cowherd. LaFleur, hired in 2019, has yet to lead the Packers beyond the NFC Championship Game in the playoffs, experiencing early exits in the wild-card round in the last two seasons.

Cowherd described LaFleur's situation as potentially being on the "coolest hot seat any coach has ever been on." He pointed to the strong coaching talent within the Packers' division, the NFC North, as a significant challenge. The division features coaches like Ben Johnson of the Chicago Bears and Kevin O'Connell of the Minnesota Vikings, both recognized for their offensive acumen, alongside Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions. The NFC North has demonstrated significant success in recent years, winning more games than the next closest division over the past two seasons.

Another factor Cowherd cited is the Packers' recent playoff performances. The team has struggled to maintain leads in crucial games, a trend exemplified by their loss in the wild-card round last season. After building a substantial 21-3 halftime lead against the Chicago Bears, Green Bay ultimately lost the game, marking a five-game losing streak to end the year, which included their final four regular-season contests after starting 9-3-1.

Under LaFleur's leadership from 2019 to the present, the Packers have compiled a 76-40-1 regular-season record and have won three division titles. His 76 regular-season wins and .654 winning percentage rank fourth in franchise history. However, their postseason record stands at 3-6.

This season, the Packers will have a new defensive coordinator, Jonathan Gannon, who previously coached the Arizona Cardinals. Gannon replaces Jeff Hafley, who departed to become the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. The team's defense will face challenges, including the absence of defensive end Micah Parsons, who tore his ACL in Week 15 of the previous season.

The competitive landscape of the NFC North includes the Bears, who are coming off their first division title since 2018. The Lions reached the NFC Championship Game last season and have secured winning records in four consecutive seasons. The Vikings, despite starting three different quarterbacks last season, also achieved a 9-8 record.

Cowherd emphasized the importance of toughness in professional football, stating, "Smart gets you a lead in pro football. Toughness gets you the win." He suggested that the Packers' inability to close out games, particularly in the playoffs, raises questions about LaFleur's ability to instill the necessary resilience in his team.
