Cole Palmer has spoken publicly for the first time about his disappointment at being left out of England's World Cup squad, asserting that he could have contributed a unique element to the team's performance.

The 23-year-old Chelsea player was among several notable omissions from the 26-man squad selected for the tournament in North America. Palmer, who scored in the Euro 2024 final, was not selected after an injury-plagued and inconsistent Premier League season. Manager Thomas Tuchel had also reportedly noted Palmer's lack of impact in previous national team call-ups.

As England prepares for their quarter-final match against Mexico, Palmer shared his feelings about watching the tournament from afar. "Every player that plays football wants to be at the World Cup," Palmer told The Times. "But it's a decision that I cannot change and a hard one, for whatever reason. But I'm just trying to enjoy the summer off - the first summer I've ever had off."

Tuchel's selections for the squad included Marcus Rashford, Anthony Gordon, Noni Madueke, and Bukayo Saka, a group noted for their pace and power. Palmer, however, maintains that his technical skill set could have offered a different approach.

"I know what I could have offered – something different to what the manager has picked," Palmer said when asked about fan support. "But like I said before, I can't change the decision and I wish everyone the best. It's like anything. If you're told you're essentially not good enough then you're going to want to prove people wrong."

Thomas Tuchel accused Palmer of failing to influence games when picked for England

Tuchel explained his decision at the time, citing Palmer's individual form at his club and his limited influence during national team duty. "He was not as decisive or as influential as he was in the last seasons, throughout the whole season," Tuchel stated. "Second of all, he was not very influential with us. His record with us was just not outstanding, not good enough to make him ‘no matter what, he is coming.' That is just the reality of it. He had to pull out injured several times, when he was in camp he did not have the impact that we all wanted to push him for."

Meanwhile, England is preparing for their quarter-final against Mexico. The match's start time was potentially subject to change due to thunderstorms, a factor midfielder Morgan Rogers described as "just another obstacle to overcome."
