Cole Palmer has spoken publicly for the first time about his disappointment at being left out of England's World Cup squad, suggesting he could have provided a distinct option for manager Thomas Tuchel. Despite scoring in the Euro 2024 final, Palmer's inclusion was not secured following an injury-affected Premier League season where, according to Tuchel, he did not have a significant impact.

Palmer, 23, admitted he wishes he was with the squad during the tournament, stating that every player aspires to compete on the world stage. "Every player that plays football wants to be at the World Cup," Palmer told The Times. "But it's a decision that I cannot change and a hard one, for whatever reason. But I'm just trying to enjoy the summer off - the first summer I've ever had off."

Tuchel's selection favored players like Marcus Rashford, Anthony Gordon, Noni Madueke, and Bukayo Saka, who offer pace and power. Palmer, however, believes his technical skill set could have brought a different dimension to the team. "I know what I could have offered - something different to what the manager has picked," he said. "But like I said before, I can't change the decision and I wish everyone the best. It's like anything. If you're told you're essentially not good enough then you're going to want to prove people wrong."

Palmer, alongside other notable omissions like Phil Foden and Harry Maguire, saw his exclusion generate discussion. Tuchel had explained his decision by citing Palmer's "lack of individual form within the club" and his failure to be "decisive or as influential" as in previous seasons. The manager also noted that Palmer had not had the desired impact when selected for the national team and had dealt with several injuries.

Meanwhile, the England squad is preparing for their quarter-final match against Mexico. Discussions are reportedly underway regarding a potential adjustment to the match's kick-off time, which could be moved forward due to anticipated thunderstorms. This potential change could see the game commence in hotter conditions, a factor midfielder Morgan Rogers acknowledged as "just another obstacle to overcome."
