The New York Yankees have placed outfielder Cody Bellinger on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain, a significant setback for a team already grappling with offensive challenges.
Bellinger sustained the injury while legging out a double during Saturday night's victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. He joins fellow sluggers Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton on the injured list, further diminishing the Yankees' offensive firepower. The duration of Bellinger's absence is yet to be determined, and the uncertain return timelines for Judge and Stanton underscore the team's urgent need to acquire offensive reinforcements before the upcoming trade deadline.
Spencer Jones has been called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill Bellinger's roster spot. However, Max Schuemann is expected to start in left field for Sunday night's game against Phillies left-handed pitcher Cristopher Sánchez.
"Obviously he’s a huge member of our team and what we do and just a tremendous all-around player," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Saturday night. "Hopefully, whether it’s some time or not, it’s on the minor side, but we’ll see."
Bellinger had been showing signs of recovery after an extended slump from late June leading up to the All-Star break. In his last 12 games, he was batting .372 with a .903 OPS, though he had not hit a home run since June 17. His recent performance was crucial for a team struggling to generate consistent production from its lineup.
In addition to his offensive contributions, Bellinger had been a standout defender in left field, accumulating 19 Defensive Runs Saved this season, ranking second in all of baseball behind Boston Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu.
