The New York Yankees may face another significant challenge in their outfield as Cody Bellinger exited Saturday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies with an apparent leg injury. Bellinger sustained the injury while doubling into second base in the top of the eighth inning at Citizens Bank Park.
Despite appearing hobbled after the slide, Bellinger initially waved off trainers and remained in the game. However, he was replaced in left field by Max Schuemann prior to the bottom of the eighth inning. The exact nature and severity of the injury remain undisclosed.
Bellinger’s recent offensive performance has seen a dip, with only five extra-base hits, all doubles, in his last 30 games, resulting in a .535 OPS during that span compared to his .860 OPS in the first 71 games. He had shown signs of warming up, collecting two hits on Saturday, including an RBI single.
Manager Aaron Boone has recently praised Bellinger's defensive capabilities, particularly in left field, stating, “He’s been so good out there. I’ve leaned more on leaving him there on days instead of moving him to center or right. His left field [play] is so stellar.”
The Yankees are already navigating the absence of star outfielder Aaron Judge, who is out indefinitely with a fractured rib. Bellinger's potential extended absence further strains the team's depth in the outfield and its lineup, which has experienced a notable downturn in recent weeks. While Bellinger has not sustained his initial hot streak at the plate, his presence remains crucial in the middle of the Yankees' order.
