Coco Gauff Withdraws from Wuhan Open Amid Controversy and Health Concerns

Coco Gauff will not compete in the Wuhan Open, the final WTA 1000 tournament of the year, after withdrawing just days after facing accusations of cheating and enduring racist abuse at the China Open. The American player announced her withdrawal on Wednesday, citing the need for rest and recovery after a demanding season.

This decision is notable as Gauff rarely misses WTA 1000 events, which are considered the second most important tournaments on the tour after Grand Slams and have been mandatory since 2024. Missing a mandatory event without a valid exemption can lead to significant fines and ranking point penalties.

Gauff's withdrawal follows an incident during her third-round match at the China Open where she was accused of cheating. With her opponent, 16-year-old Sun Xinran, leading 5-4 in the third set, Gauff stopped a rally, claiming she was distracted by flickering electronic advertising boards. The point was replayed, and Gauff went on to win the match.

In the aftermath, Gauff addressed the controversy and received a wave of racist comments and direct messages on social media, including racial slurs. She responded on X, formerly Twitter, stating, "You can dislike me or disagree about what happened without being racist." She added, "The amount of racist comments/dms I’ve received in the last few hours is insane. Lastly, I'm not a cheater or a thief."

Later, Gauff explained her actions in a separate post, clarifying that players are permitted to challenge calls after a point concludes. She admitted uncertainty about whether she had actually seen the flicker, but stated she raised her hands before her opponent hit the ball upon seeing it again. She apologized to Xinran for the situation, acknowledging the young player's emotional reaction and expressing understanding.

The controversy appeared to impact Gauff's performance in her subsequent fourth-round match against Elise Mertens. Gauff lost in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, and appeared physically compromised during the match. At one point, she expressed to her player's box that she had "no energy" and felt like she was "going to pass out."

Following the loss, Gauff acknowledged the toll the previous day's events had taken. "It has been kind of draining, I'm not going to lie," she stated. "I just turn off my phone and move on. There's nothing you can do. I think today I was just a bit flat. I just didn't play well. I think I wasn't moving well. There were a lot of things I didn't do well."
